Drawing

This is the composite of the port and starboard drawings for the 32/11D design drawing for the Buckley class destroyer escorts dated December 22, 1943. The vertical colors used were dull black (BK), ocean gray (5-O) and light gray (5-L) with haze gray (5-H) for 5-L to get Measure 31 instead of Measure 32. Note, the drawing included both bow and stern views, and a whaleboat on both starboard and port.

The first drawing for Design 11D was attached to the July 15, 1943, memo to PacFleet for the Benson class. Design 11D was drawn for the Sims and Fletcher classes of destroyers in March 1944. The 11D pattern for the Buckley destroyer escorts above was modified when drawn for these later classes by reversing the port and starboard. So, the prominent panel on the starboard bow of the Buckley drawing appeared on the port bow of the destroyer drawings and many panels on the destroyers were made larger and darker and the black triangular panel on the port was not present. An “experimental” version of this design was also sent to the battleship USS Indiana (BB-58) on September 16, 1943, and worn by her by October.
