Destroyers

USS Stembel (DD-644) in the Measure 32 colors: dull black and light gray. The hull number would dictate Measure 31, but we know from a report by Construction Battalion #1019 that Stembel was painted in Measure 32 in May 1944 at Noumea. The dull black appears darker where it is wet. This view is from the USS Chenango (CVE-28) and an Independence class light carrier, wearing Measure 21, is in the background.

Another shot of the bow of Stembel taken at the Iwo Jima Invasion rehearsal near Tinian, in the Marianas Islands on February 12, 1945, from the battleship USS Texas (BB-35). Note that the aft funnel cap has been painted black. The lightest color here is very light possibly because this photo is directly down-sun.

This photo has been cropped only vertically. These are ships near Guam on July 24, 1944, during the invasion taken from the USS New Mexico (BB-40). There are a large number of LSTs surrounding a Fletcher class destroyer wearing Design 10D. The USS Stembel (DD-644) was acting as flagship for LST Flotilla 16 off Guam from July 21 through August 1, 1944, and provided command and communication for the LSTs. So there is a strong possibility that this is Stembel. The next photo is a close-up.

The official caption to this photo says that these are ships near Guam on July 24, 1944, during the invasion taken from the USS New Mexico (BB-40). This enlarged cropped portion shows a Fletcher wearing Design 10D. USS Stembel (DD-644) was acting as flagship for LST Flotilla 16 off Guam from July 21 through August 1, 1944. So this may be Stembel.

The lower portion shows a Fletcher wearing Design 10D, probably Measure 32. USS Stembel (DD-644) arrived at Iwo Jima on February 16 and the hull number of this ship appears to be 644, so I believe this to be Stembel.
