The light carrier USS Cowpens (CVL-25) is seen at sea on August 31, 1944, wearing camouflage 32/7A. The vertical colors should be dull black, ocean gray and light gray, but the colors here are greatly washed out and appear light. USS Independence (CVL-22) is seen in background in 33/8A. CVL-25USS Cowpens (CVL-25) taken by USS Wasp (CV-18) on September 6, 1944, wearing camouflage 32/7A. Cowpens is being approached by an unidentified destroyer in Measure 21. The hull number on the destroyer appears to be 546, so the destroyer might be USS Brown. Photo source: NARA 80-G-284090.
The closest ship to the camera is USS Cowpens (CVL-25) wearing camouflage 32/7A taken from USS Wasp (CV-18). Cowpens is being refueled by an unidentified tanker with USS Canberra (CA-70) on the other side. Other ships of Task Group 38.1 are in background with probably USS Wichita (CA-45) in Measure 21 to the right. The official caption on this photo is dated September 9, 1944, but the TG 38.1 chronology states that refueling took place on September 2 and again on September 11. Photo source: NARA 80-G-284094.
